Bail conditions dropped after cannabis raids

Police have dropped their insistence that garden stores record customer details when selling certain types of equipment as part of the bail conditions for those arrested in the Operation Lime cannabis raids.
Christchurch District Court Judge Christopher Somerville was told today that the condition that the shops keep a register of customers was now being dropped nationwide, three weeks after the raids.
Ten people charged after the Christchurch raids went to court today to argue for the deletion of that clause in their bail conditions, and police agreed.

Operation Lime - Grow Shops Raided

Following a two year undercover operation, police have arrested 257 people including the entire staff of Switched on Gardener. Police allege that they have broken the corner stone of organised crime and commercial cannabis cultiviation in New Zealand. In reality many of the arrests were for minor offences committed by staff members in their own time. There is no evidence that Swiched on Gardener has been operating illegally or encouraging staff to break the law.

"Only on the East Coast" says Judge

When the tsunami warning came, Richard Carlson knew he had to get his cannabis stash to higher ground.
So he had nearly 8kg of the drug in his car when police spotted his broken tail light and pulled him over.
"These facts, with respect, could only happen on the East Coast," Judge Tony Adeane said in Gisborne District Court yesterday.
The facts lay "between irony and farce", said the judge.
Richard Toihau Carlson, 57, pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis for supply and was sentenced to 12 months home detention.
